Abstract: | During the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries a prolific literary debate is established for the condition of women, in which writers align themselves for or against, and conveying a series of profeminist or antifeminist topics respectively. This dichotomous discussion starts from a multifaceted ideological confrontation of a diverse nature that is rooted centuries before. Bernat Metge in Lo Somni summarizes the topics of both positions: in book III he censors women, but in book IV he praises them. From a comparative analysis with Boccaccio's Corbaccio, the main author from which Metge borrows the misogynistic arguments for the writing of The Dream, we will extract all the literary topics in one sense and another, without losing sight of the sources and arguments inserted to the medieval tradition preceded by both works. However, especially the work seeks to investigate the degree of transgression of the late Christian misogynistic order that can be attributed to the apology that Metge makes in Lo Somni. In return, the work seeks to make clear the readjustment capacity of misogyny and the influences of the cultural renewal of the late Middle Ages, offering a perspective on medievalism far removed from anachronistic and biased stereotypes. |
