Title: Un mapa de los suburbios norteamericanos como espacio geográfico y literario
Author: Rodríguez de Riera, Ana Teresa
Tutor: Grasset Morell, Eloi
Abstract: Throughout the lenses of literature, a form of understanding the suburbs will be proposed in this paperwork by choosing two short stories from writer John Cheever: "The swimmer" and "The Housebreaker of Shady Hill", which are encompassed within Bertrand Westphal's geocritical approach. His offering is aimed at the assimilation of literature as one of the defining elements which deftly allow to chart the mapping of any human space. Thus, the best way to understand the construct of the suburbs in the most integral and profound way will be examined. Despite the fact that it was originally proposed simply as a much healthier and safer residential alternative for the standard American city dweller, suburbs became a much more complex social structure, going way beyond the mere urban or geographical space in the process. Michel Foucault's concept of Heterotopia, which was utilized in "The Swimmer", will be applied in this analysis, in conjunction with some essential concepts from Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari's Geophilosophy. The analysis of "The housebreaker of Shady Hill", will be supported by several theorists and puritan ethics scholars -Perry Miller and Harold Bloom- within the framework of culture in the social structure of the suburbs.
