Title: El papel de la lactancia materna exclusiva en la diarrea del lactante
Author: Huesca Villascusa, Marta

Abstract: The benefits of breastfeeding (BF) for both mother and baby are well known worldwide. In spite of this, thousands of children die every year in our planet due to poor feeding in the first months of life. With the aim of continuing to promote breastfeeding, a bibliographic review of different databases has been carried out, which brings together the scientific evidence on the benefits of breastfeeding against morbi-mortality caused by gastrointestinal diseases with diarrheal symptoms, specifically, that caused by rotavirus, the main cause of intestinal infections in infants. The results showed that most studies affirm the association of breastfeeding with a lower incidence of diarrhea in infants, as well as its relationship with the beneficial effects on the intestinal microbiota of the bioactive components of breast milk, specifically HMOs and IgA. In conclusion, the existence of a higher prevalence of diarrhea in infants not exclusively breastfed has been demonstrated. In addition, it has been possible to show which components of BF are responsible for the protection and development of the infant's intestine. It is necessary to increase the promotion of breastfeeding and to continue to carry out clinical and experimental trials.
