Author: Alba Granados, Jordi

Abstract: The purpose of this work is to study the doctoral personnel, from the point of view of deepening the knowledge and characteristics of their figure, as well as the current employment situation and, in more detail, the doctoral personnel employed in companies, with the aim of finding out what characteristics of this personnel can determine their incorporation in companies and, at the same time, if some characteristics of the companies, such as the sector and the percentage of personnel with a doctoral degree, have an influence. The research methodology used varies depending on the aspect analyzed. On the one hand, to answer the research questions related to the characteristics and current employment situation of doctoral personnel, secondary data from different public sources have been used, such as public databases and reports published by official international and Spanish organizations. On the other hand, to answer the research questions related to doctoral personnel employed in companies, qualitative research has been used, using semi-structured interviews with a sample of 15 companies and 4 doctoral schools, complemented by a review of the literature available in academic and non-academic sources. The results obtained in the research developed, in a synthetic manner, are presented below. The doctoral staff has obtained the highest academic degree through the development of original research and progress, which represents a relevant contribution to knowledge in a given area of knowledge. This personnel is characterized for having both specific knowledge and skills in a specific area and transversal, i.e., applicable to any area. The employment situation, from the point of view of unemployment rates, is not serious, since it is the lowest among people with higher education. The main destination of people with this degree is the higher education sector, followed by the public administration and, lastly, the business sector. However, from the point of view of international comparison, the indicators relating to this personnel, both in Spain and in Catalonia, show results far removed from those of the countries in our environment. As for the doctoral personnel employed in companies, qualitative research has allowed us to identify the relevant skills for companies: expert, innovative and advanced knowledge; the ability to work on projects and communication and relational skills. Without prejudice, however, that companies and universities also identify a competency deficit of this doctor, which they address through various internal or external actions. Likewise, these outstanding competencies are one of the reasons why companies hire personnel with this training, together with the collaboration with other entities and institutions and the development of R&D&I activities. Finally, there is still a divergence of evidence in relation to the relevance of the industrial or economic sector of the company and the current proportion of doctoral personnel to incorporate new personnel with this profile.
