Abstract: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurobiological and neurodevelopmental disorder characterized primarily by difficulty in communication and social interaction, the presence of restrictive and repetitive and atypical sensory sensitivities. The prevalence of ASD has been increasing in recent years along with society’s need to be aware of and understand this disorder. Therefore, the need to address the different areas of difficulty that individuals with ASD face and effective intervention strategies has increased. The objective of this study is to examine and analyze ASD from a multidisciplinary perspective, including its neurobiological foundations, genetic and environment factors, and the psychoeducational and therapeutic implications for individuals with ASD. This study be divided into three parts. Firstly, a literature review will be conducted on the neurobiological foundations of ASD. It will examine the brain anomalies and dysfunctions in neuronal connectivity that are present and associated with this disorder. The environment, social, and emotional factors that can influence the development of ASF will also be studied. Secondly, the theoretical framework of ASD will be addressed. This will include the historical evolution of the concept of autism, the analysis of the disorder based on the diagnostic manual DSM-V, definition, characteristics, comorbidity, differential diagnosis, therapeutical approaches, and psychoeducational needs. Lastly, a proposal for intervention will be presented, focused on promoting the development of social, communicative, and cognitive.
