Abstract: Surgeon General 2001 memorandum showed clearly that smoking is an ever increasing problem in females. Although evidence is contradictory, some authors claim that women have more difficulties and of different type than men when they decide to give up smoking. This paper reviews a number of factors (e.g., surrogate therapy, affective states, concern about weight, menstrual cycle related distress and social support) that affect women smoking cessation so as to guide the most appropriate therapeutic strategies. A review of literature about smoking cessation during pregnancy is also made –during this period a number of motivational, social, medical and cultural factors can make the smoking cessation easier.
