Abstract: The evolution of a field of knowledge cannot be explained by a simple consecution of phases in which the “old” questions are replaced by the “new” ones. Dealing with the definition of culture, this article pretends to look at the common grounds and the gaps where “old” and “new” critical perspectives, on the one hand, and cultural geography and cultural studies, on the other, relate to each other. The aim is to vindicate a major epistemological reflection in our practices as researchers within the academy and within the society. The starting point is the recognition of a lack of dialog between different perspectives (especially between those that are not antagonistic in principle). This lack of communication makes it difficult to constitute a coherent and constant social alternative in front of the general tendency to assume values like competitiveness that are imposed by the market logic.
