Abstract: The current healthcare system faces the challenge of managing complex surgical care processes involving specialized professionals, expensive resources, supply chains, complex operating rooms, and long surgical waiting lists. Managing all these factors, especially in large hospitals that serve various specialties and different patients needs, is a task filled with difficulties. This work proposes the implementation of a Surgical Management Information System (SMIS) to streamline surgical operations, optimize resources allocation, and enhance patient safety. The main objectives of SMIS include improving surgical efficiency, reducing waiting lists, and integrating with existing hospital information systems. Furthermore, it addresses the cultural change among healthcare professionals, optimization of surgical resources, their standardization and traceability, improvement of process efficiency and safety, design of strategic planning tools, and real-time patient tracking and safety. The impact of SMIS on sustainability, ethical and social responsibility, and diversity is multifaceted. It aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and promotes ethical and socially responsible practices. It is analysed from a gender perspective and reduces healthcare inequalities. The proposed SMIS aims to enhance surgical management, aligning with sustainable and ethical principles while addressing the complexities of modern healthcare.
