Author: Touceda Cascallar, Diana
Tutor: Igareda, Paula
Abstract: The film industry has undergone a significant evolution over the years, passing through various stages that began with the introduction of sound in cinema and culminated in the form we know it today. Throughout this process, different phases have been overcome with the aim of breaking the different linguistic barriers to facilitate its global expansion. Today, a wide range of dubbed and subtitled content is available in almost any language. This is mainly due to streaming platforms such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, which enable global access to such content. Audiovisual translation comprises several modalities, including dubbing. In Spain, dubbing is widely recognized, and it continues to expand. This meticulous process seeks to evoke in the viewer the same effect as the original content in the target language. Translating humor represents an additional challenge, as the translator must address this difficulty in the most effective manner, occasionally requiring the use of creativity to convey the humorous element as effectively as possible. Humor can be constructed through various types of humorous elements and wordplay. Consequently, this work will involve the elaboration of a theoretical framework that allows for the exploration of different humorous elements, translation techniques employed in dubbing, as well as strategies used for translating wordplay. Subsequently, an analysis will be conducted on various examples of humorous elements present in the series "The Office" (Daniels, 2005-2013), aiming to compare the techniques and strategies used in its dubbing translation and to evaluate their impact on the humorous charge.
