Abstract: Introduction: Virtual Reality (VR) offers new approaches for managing emotional symptoms such as anxiety. This technology is presented as a promising tool for psychological support and follow up in the oncological field. However, few studies refer to the use of VR for treating cancer patients. Aim: The main goal of this review is to know if Virtual Reality as an intervention tool reduces anxiety in cancer patients. Methods: Five databases (Pubmed, Cinhal, Scopus, Cochrane, ProQuest) and one search engine (Google Scholar) were queried between April and May 2020. GRADE system was applied for evaluating the quality of evidence and tools from the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal were used on the selected articles. Results: A total of 12 studies met the eligibility criteria. Most of them reported a reduction in the anxiety levels for patients with different types of cancer after VR intervention and in over half of them such reduction was statistically significant. Conclusion: Virtual reality is an effective tool in reducing anxiety in cancer patients working as a distraction, an educational tool and as a therapeutic instrument or to support other therapies.
