Abstract: This study carries out a description of the languages that constitute the basis of construction of the Semantic Web: XML, RDF and OWL. Specifically, a study is carried out from the lexical database WordNet. Lastly, we present the design and implementation of an ontology to represent the lexical relations of nicknames in Catalan. From this ontology a small database is created on the subject of household pets. This practical case enables us to draw conclusions on the advantages of introducing metadata in electronic documents, and on the facilities offered by existing applications for development of these kinds of documents.
