Abstract: Cognitive reserve is a hypothetical concept today, which appears to be the key to meet the challenge of neurodegenerative diseases. This is defined as those functional capacities of the brain that help the person to tolerate a greater brain damage without presenting clinical manifestation. The link between this concept and people positive lifestyles makes that as an independent variable for intervention, prevention and health promotion. The morphological changes in the brain, and the consolidation of a stronger brain network and efficient mechanisms seem to explain the functioning of the cognitive reserve. This review defines the concept of cognitive reserve and models that explain it, finds ways to measure it and represent it, and demonstrates the link with positive lifestyles through epidemiological studies and neuroimaging, in order to better understand the concept and focus it in as a future line of research.
