Abstract: This document introduces the basic concepts necessary for the execution of program productivity metrics. After the introduction, it goes on to study in more detail the various productivity metrics most widely used at present, which are code lines (geared towards the size of the project), function points (geared towards the functionality of the project, specific to management projects), characteristic points (similar to function points but more generic and useful for other types of projects) and use case points (also geared towards the function and specific to object orientation projects). Based on these metrics, and with the help of productivity estimation models, such as the COCOMO model, it explains how to obtain the necessary effort estimates to develop a program project and the distribution of effort throughout all the stages of the project based on the development phase estimates. It also tackles, albeit not quite as in-depth, the bang metric and the standard proposed by the IEEE for applying productivity metrics. Finally, the guidelines for developing and implementing a proprietary metrics plan are given.
