Abstract: Recent studies indicate that the alteration of the population of microorganisms resident in the intestine, known as intestinal microbiota, is associated with the development of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and insulin resistance. It has been shown that the composition of the intestinal microbiota is different, both in mice and in humans, compared to healthy and those suffering from type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. In this review we compile the results of scientific studies that support this theory. Demonstrating a relationship between the alteration of the intestinal microbiota and the increase of inflammatory processes related to the development of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. It has also been observed that the intake of prebiotics and probiotics, both in supplements and in the diet, help to modulate the composition of the gut microbiota, thus decreasing insulin resistance and inflammatory processes.
