Abstract: The prevalence of overweight and obesity continues to rise worlwide. Weight loss is difficult to achieve and maintaining the weight loss is even more difficult. For the modification of eating habits to prevail over time, a change in behavior is necessary. Among the new emerging strategies to achieve this change, mindfulness is included. The objective of this work is to review the current state of mindfulness-based interventions aimed at the overweight and/or obese population. A search was made of randomized controlled studies that applied mindfulness and that followed the inclusion determined criteria. Fourteen studies met the criteria and were included in the review. Despite the heterogeneity in the design of the studies, behavioral changes, metabolic improvements and weight loss, were observed. This review shows that the inclusion of mindfulness in weight maintenance programs for overweight and/or obese population is an effective strategy. More long-term research is needed to examine their efficacy for weight loss maintenance.
