Title: El papel de la microbiota intestinal y los probióticos en la obesidad

Abstract: The gut microbiota (GM), that microbial ecosystem that lives in our intestine, is sensitive to environmental factors such as food, antibiotics, childbirth... When dysbiosis occurs (rupture of this ecosystems balance) we observe a series of alterations that affects both the immune system and the metabolism that precedes diseases such as obesity. After a search in Pubmed and Cochrane Library 42 studies were identified that related obesity or overweight with microbiota. We studied data from 19 clinical trials with dietary interventions and 14 studies with prebiotic or probiotic treatments. We found significant differences in the MI of obese/overweight people with respect to normal weight at phylum level, but the most relevant associations were found in several species of the genus Bifidobacterium whose abundance was related to reductions in weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and body fat as well as the regulation of appetite hormones and energy balance. Regarding the modification of the GM as support of obesity treatment, we can point out that caloric restriction diets as well as some prebiotics (Rhemannia glutinosa roots and yellow pea fiber) and probiotics (Lactobacillus casei Shirota and Bifidobacterium animalis) were related to the reduction of some anthropometric parameters, but the differences found in the methodologies of the interventions, together with the different impacts found in the MI, make it difficult to obtain solid conclusions about the influence that such dietary or pre and probiotic interventions may have on the treatment of obesity.
