Abstract: The innovation districts are emerging urban regeneration developments in the 21st century context of the knowledge economy and an increasingly global urbanism, which transports and adapts strategies from one geography to another. They are catalogued as icons of the new urban and economic paradigm and thus are presented as a possible solution to some of the main urban challenges of our time; Nevertheless, they are also criticised for being little inclusive, top-down initiatives, ignoring or limiting citizen participation and from which they derive negative social externalities such as gentrification and social inequality. In this respect, this research provides an analytical framework to explore the articulations between the physical and social configurations that occur in these clusters. Using multiple case study as a method, we inquire about the urban strategies and policies that foster socially inclusive innovation districts.
