Abstract: This paper investigates the interaction between lexicon and syntax in the calculation of aspectual interpretations. It presents the hypothesis according to which verbs impose different lexical weights or degrees of prototypicality in calculation of sentential aspect, so that the verbs that share the same basic Aktionsart type not necessarily have the same chance of aspectual coercion. In particular, it is shown that verbs can be classified into three groups, according to their degree of aspectual restriction: stable monosemous verbs, flexible monosemous verbs and aspectual polysemous verbs, a typology that is reflected in different degrees of syntactic, semantic and morphological stability.
