Urbs en China: miradas europeas durante el período moderno de la realidad urbana en China

Abstract

Generalmente se ha asociado el mundo chino con un modelo de asentamiento rural. Sin embargo, las ciudades chinas han jugado un papel importante a lo largo de la historia siendo un reflejo de la sociedad de cada momento. El objetivo de este artículo es presentar las características de las ciudades chinas vistas a través de las informaciones que llegaron a Europa durante el período moderno. Centrándonos en el estudio de la parte física de la ciudad (urbs), es posible analizar la importancia y funciones que tuvieron los centros urbanos del periodo tardío imperial en China así como comprender los intereses y la particular mirada de los españoles y portugueses durante los siglos XVI y XVII.

Chinese world has been generally associated with a rural settlement pattern. However, Chinese cities have played an important role throughout history, being a reflection of the society of the time. The aim of this article is to present the characteristics of the Chinese cities seen through the eyes of European informants. Specifically, we will study the physical part of the city (urbs) enabling us to analyse firstly the importance and function that the urban centres had in late imperial China. Secondly, it will allow us to understand the interests and the specific perspective of the Spanish and Portuguese from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
