Abstract: The scarcity of multidimensional studies of chronic pain hinders the biopsychosocial approach, which leads to a frequent one-dimensional biomedical approach in its prevention and treatment. We wonder what are the psychosocial factors that determine the risk of suffering from chronic low back pain and disability and to what extent determine its prevalence in the population of Tenerife, Canary Islands. The general objective will be to know the relative importance of risk and protection factors in the occurrence and evolution of chronic low back pain. To achieve these objectives, a case-control study and a cohort study will be carried out with quarterly follow-ups for 2 years. Recruitment of cases will be done through primary care physicians at the health centers. We will apply a questionnaire / survey along with specific tests to measure risk and protective factors and the experience of pain and disability. We hope that results confirm the importance of psychological factors of the fear avoidance model and that they point to the role of protective factors, as well as the significant effect of critical life events and a minor effect on personality and social support factors. An expected limitation of the study will be the high dropout rate that occurs in longitudinal studies. The results of the study will allow the prevention and development of alternative multidisciplinary and individualized treatments for chronic low back pain from primary care successfully.
