Abstract: The amazing wealth of the Spanish tongue can be appreciated in all its glory by comparing the differences between its dialects. Spain Spanish is a very different dialect from the ones in Latin-American countries. Although each country has a different dialect, there is something that puts the one from Spain in a completely different category. When it comes to audiovisual translation, there are two major productions, that is, the one in Spain Spanish and the one in Latin-American Spanish. The main focus of this study is to compare both Spanish translations of the film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, with the intention of finding out the differences and similarities that exist between both, and of determining if these differences justify the production of both translations. After watching the movie in the original language, 48 fragments were selected, categorised, and analysed. These specific fragments were selected since they represent common translation problems between Spanish and English. The translation techniques proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet were used to analyse each translation and to determine the technique used in each case. Among other things, it was discovered that there is some loss of meaning in a few cases. The conclusion arrived at, after analysing these 48 fragments, is that the biggest differences between the two translations are not terminological in nature, but related to pronunciation and the use of the vosotros in the Spain translation as opposed to the ustedes in the Latin-American one. It is concluded, therefore, that what truly makes the translation to both of these dialects necessary is the issue of belonging and identity, not lack of comprehension.
