Abstract: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age. Women with PCOS are at greater risk of presenting various pathologies and metabolic alterations such as insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, glucose intolerance, type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, endothelial and vascular dysfunction, hypertension, altered adipokine secretion, hirsutism, acne , infertility, nonalcoholic fatty liver, altered inflammatory markers, and malignancies, such as breast and endometrial cancer. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are beneficial for health, among their effects include regulation of the production and action of insulin, reduction of cardiovascular risk, improvement of the lipid profile, possible effect in reducing liver fat, etc. As many of these benefits are directly related to alterations inherent to PCOS, it has been suggested that supplementation with omega-3 PUFA could have effects on improving some of these parameters in women with PCOS. Now a days, there is still no concrete evidence of this relationship, but numerous studies are being carried out in this regard that show promising effects on different parameters. This review looks at the impact of omega-3 supplements on different altered parameters of women with PCOS.
