Abstract: Smartphone use in the teenage population is becoming more and more frequent and can lead to addiction. This implies negative consequences on the psychological well-being and mental health of adolescents. In view of these difficulties, the aim is to find out the role played by emotional skills in addiction and problematic use of mobile phones. For this purpose, a review of the literature is carried out where 13 studies published in the last 10 years for the ages between 10 and 19 years are analyzed. The results indicate that deficits in emotional regulation, self-control and self-esteem are emotional competencies frequently involved in the development and maintenance of addiction. Adolescent self-regulatory difficulties appear to play a predictive role while high self-esteem is a protective factor. In turn, associated factors such as depression or depressive state, suicidal thoughts and disruptive behavior and the influence of the role of social relationships influence the development of addiction. Therefore, it is necessary to consider these emotional processes, in particular, emotional regulation and self-esteem in preventive programs in adolescents for the proper use of the mobile phone, considering emotional education as a protective factor to possible addictions.
