Abstract: Social media have changed the traditional communication model based on mass media creating the bond between institutions and their public. They have also transformed the way in which companies understand this field, as communication, especially online, has become an increasingly relevant social phenomenon. Museums have not been unaffected by that change so they had to adapt to this new paradigm, although many of them are still unaware of the great potential new technologies have. That is, the opportunity to approach their visitors differently, to reach more people and to attract new audience to the museum. However, in order to get those benefits, they have to create an appropriate plan designed specifically for these platforms and make good use of them, as it is not enough to be present, but a global and effective strategy must be established. Therefore, this study describes the importance of social media, their purpose in museums and the benefits they bring to the company, as well as a digital communications plan designed exclusively for the Museo Arqueológico Provincial de Alicante, so that this organization can introduce it to its communication department and get the most out of its social media and networks.
