Abstract: The present research focuses on the difficulties of early childhood where autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is one of the most serious mental disorders (Generalitat de Catalunya, 2012). Early detection and differential diagnosis with intellectual disability (ID) is a complex and essential process to adjust the intervention and improve the quality of life of children and their families. To review the existing knowledge on the differential diagnosis between autism and ID in early childhood and to describe the psycho-pedagogical evaluation that is carried out at this stage. A bibliographic review was carried out with a qualitative design of an expository type, analyzing a sample of 11 selected articles through the Scopus, Google Scholar and Dialnet databases. Social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviors were 56.3% representative of the autism diagnosis category. The overall developmental delay obtains 71.6% of representativeness within the diagnostic category of ID and within the category of psycho-pedagogical evaluation the family has a representativeness of 21%. There are differential features between autism and ID, but it is observed that the diagnostic difficulty is found in cases with ASD and concomitant intellectual disability. No results could be obtained on the characteristics of psycho-pedagogical assessment in childhood.
