Abstract: Unhealthy dietary patterns, based on ultra-processed and hyper-calorie foods, a low fruit and vegetable consumption and a sedentary lifestyle, leads to a weight gain which represents a risk factor in the development of non-communicable diseases. Overweight is currently a priority problem for the health system and Spain is one of the countries with a higher prevalence of infant and adolescent overweight. Food, among others, is one of the key factors associated to this situation. Diets based on traidtional mediterranean patterns have been appreciated by public health experts, representing a prevention factor for the health at long-term. Traditional Mediterranean diet is recommended for different population groups, infants and adolescents among them. In this context, recommendations are based on dividing the daily calories in 4 or 5 meals (breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch, mid-afternoon snack and dinner) and being the main meals of plant origin. Although there are initiatives to sensitize and inform about the importance of healthy food during childhood, it still exists dietary patterns, specially in the mid-afternoon snack, that doesn¿t support a good health state, neither in short or long term. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the nutritional quality of the midafternoon snack of children aged between 3 and 12 years old, in the city of Barcelona and his adherence in the MD. Results show that most of the infants have the habit of having the mid-afternoon snack daily, but they¿re not having a healthy snack even if they have a good adherence to the MD. This results shows that mid-afternoon snack has a big scope for improvement and the most careless meal in this population group. This research has made possible the design of a healthy mid-afternoon snack model, based on official recommendations and based on social, cultural and environmental circumstances of the studied population. This document intends to become a useful tool for future promotion of healthy mid-afternoon snack consumption.
