Abstract: COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) is the disease caused by a new type of coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2. With this Master thesis, an existing COVID-19 transmission model has been optimized and extended for the analysis of multiple periods of different transmission rate, making possible the inclusion, as part of the analysis, of information on an arbitrary number of non-pharmacological measures. The methodology consists in the application of a mechanistic model that describes the evolution of the disease based on the effect of the different intervention measures and that makes the estimation of this effect possible by applying Bayesian analysis methods. The positive results obtained for a total of 32 European countries, with data following very different patterns, lead to the conclusion, on the one hand, that the model used is an appropriate method for describing the evolution of the disease. On the other hand, the results lead to conclusions regarding the effect of the different measures that are consistent with available information. For example, the results for the first wave of the pandemic indicate that the most effective measures were those related to the stay-at-home orders and recommendations (lockdown), the measures applied jointly in March 2020 and the mandatory use of masks. However, some results for more recent data have highlighted some limitations of the model. Among others, the current version does not take into consideration the effect of vaccination on the evolution of the disease.
