Abstract: We are in the midst of a change in the age structure of the working population, which will intensify in the coming years. Given this scenario, longer working lives are envisaged, leading to a focus on older workers. Postponing the retirement age must be accompanied by a change in the way these workers are viewed in terms of their contribution. This paper is based on Eurofound's concept of sustainable work, as work in which living and working conditions are such that they help people to participate and remain in work for a longer work life. Organisations have a key role to play in this challenge, integrating into their strategies and implementing age management practices that allow older workers to be considered as strategic assets. Following an analysis of the relevance of this demographic challenge and desk research on the statements of international institutions, an in-depth descriptive statistical study of data from the European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS) was conducted in order to obtain an overview of the determinants and indicators of sustainable work among employees in Spain, from the perspective of older workers. The areas where there is most room for improvement were identified, including the prevalence of physical risks, shortcomings in lifelong learning that hinder employability and age discrimination. These issues should be addressed as a matter of priority by institutions through public policy measures that define guidelines to be followed and that protect the most vulnerable. They should also be prioritised by organisations in order to improve the situation of these workers and therefore encourage them to remain in the workforce, since they are a valuable asset for these organisations.
