Title: El rol de los MOOC en la alfabetización científica de la ciudadanía
Author: Rada Martínez, Paula

Abstract: New participatory and flexible approaches to learning, including Massive Open Online Courses, known by the acronym MOOCs, offer great opportunities to create and exchange knowledge and experiences among a significant number of people, generating a clear social impact. Specifically, these courses can play a substantial role in the scientific literacy of citizens, which is much needed to address the various crises and challenges facing 21st century society, many of which are related to scientific and technological issues. Based on this, this Master's thesis analyses the main strengths and limitations of MOOCs on scientific topics, with the aim of identifying the fundamental characteristics that these courses should have, in terms of design, in order to improve the scientific literacy of their participants. On the other hand, and without forgetting that one of the purposes of MOOCs is to combat educational inequality, it is important to consider the inequalities that persist in participation in these courses. In this sense, it is concluded that although MOOCs do not meet the expectations they initially aroused, they continue to have great potential for the democratisation of knowledge. On this basis, some future lines of work are suggested, aimed at deepening the study of the impact of MOOCs on scientific literacy, increasing the diversity of their audience and improving the weakest aspects of these courses.
