Abstract: The influence of opioids on the economy of many countries and their effects on public health raises to investigate their mechanism of action in order to mitigate their adverse effects. In this work we focused in the study of isotonitacene, a new synthetic opioid that has been associated with increasing rates of addiction and mortality in Northern developed countries. In this study we compared brain activity using 8F-FDG-PET/CT acquired images in rat after the injection of different opioids, morphine, fentanyl and isotonitacene. Data analysis was performed using two different techniques, voxel based morphometry (VBM) and region of interest (ROI) analysis. The main difference between them is the resolution achieved. ROI identify large volumetric areas measurements of voxels as one data, and VBM detect every voxel in the picture as a unique region that means VBM needs more computational power and more analysis time. Our results show that there are significant differences between opioids effect compared to control. Furthermore, isotonitacene is stronger than morphine and fentanyl and morphine showed the weakest effect. This result helps to understand opioid system in the brain analyzed by two different image analysis methods.
