Abstract: My project, which I have called 'Cities', is inspired by the aerial vision of cities, especially at night, in which artificial lighting produces intense effects in the centre and is dispersed or blurred as it approaches the periphery. Night vision is much more expressive and forceful because the profile of a city is basically constituted in the artificial light of private premises; of the vehicles that circulate on the streets or simply by commercial adverts. Using traditional artistic drawing techniques such as graphite pencil, charcoal pencil, and fountain pen ink, I represent various imaginary visions of cities seen at night and from space, where the highest concentration of light is usually maintained. I started off with smaller formats such as A5 and A4 formats, experimenting the different formal possibilities of such representations, which are neither fully abstract nor figurative. The standardization of said representations through meticulous, detailed, repetition is related to the enhanced production of digital images. By repeatedly representing cities at night, I myself take the place of a satellite and become an optic, yet fully analogical device. I will scan each drawing archiving it on a digital platform that will become both my archive and artistic diary. I will also produce digital formats (SVG, STL, JPG) that will allow me to use the Digital Manufacturing Laboratory, with two objectives: a) Experiment with different techniques and applications such as: engraving, digital printing, cutting, etc., on different materials such as: wood, plastic (transparent and opaque), vinyl, etc. b) Produce other printed formats that benefit from the classic design of pleated maps or street guides. My goal as an artist is to achieve a symbiosis between traditional analogical techniques (mainly drawing), and the application of digital manufacturing machines, both in 2D and 3D. This will give me, I hope, insight into the ways of images, their status as optical and cultural representations, and their production. In this process, I will explore the function of image producing devices by becoming what Flusser calls 'a black box' mechanism 1, that is, the mysterious device in which images are produced according to a program, a set of rules, which we persistently forget.
