Abstract: There is still lot to learn about the way mobile communication is adopted, or rejected, by older people. How do older people use mobile telephony? What are the motivations for rejecting mobile telephony, if any? We discuss the results of a qualitative case study with older people (60+) conducted in the metropolitan area of Montevideo in 2012. Participants positively evaluate the permanent connectivity allowed by mobile phones. They use them in combination with other channels, as the fixed line, for a number of goals and with several interlocutors. Besides voice calls, SMS are commonly used. Among non users we find both the rejection discourse as well as unawareness regarding cell phones. Finally, all the Internet users are also mobile phone users.
