Abstract: The main aim of this article is to describe the scope of social capital in the cultural events held in Catalonia and to analyze their influence on tourist attraction. It also tries to determine the impact of three elements of social capital involved in organizing events (motivational, internal networking and leadership) have on local tourism. The study is based on a sample of 263 events that were sent a survey to determine the presence and weight of the factors of social capital. This information has been combined with data on impacts and tourist attraction also obtained from the same survey and by the application of the chi-square test, we check whether the differences between the various elements of social capital are statistically significant. The main findings obtained show that the events with elements of social capital that strengthens social cohesion comprehend and justify the conclusion as a socializing fact, whatever their tourist extent. It can be also noticed that networking relationships strengthen the internal cohesion, the representativeness and the sense of community identity. Finally we realise that the presence of leadership elements that give visibility and link the event with external networks explains the difference in the attractiveness and tourism impacts of events. The main contribution of this paper is to reveal the role of social capital as a factor in social and touristic impact on Catalan tourist events. As a conclusion, the incorporation of social capital as a strategic asset for the management and the creation of new touristic products and policies focused on cultural events is recommended.
