Abstract: Traditionally, migration policies have been an exclusive competence of states, as they affect two of their constituent elements: territory and population. Among European countries, however, the creation of an area of free movement for its nationals (1985 Schengen Agreement) meant the abolition of common internal borders and, therefore, the need to harmonize the access mechanisms of people non-communitarian nationals in this common space. In short, handling this extra-EU migration has become a requirement due the establishment of free movement in the EU. Since 1999, the States of the European Union are committed to this European immigration and asylum policy. Nevertheless, advances in this policy have been weak and reduced, and very focused on issues related to security. Thus, following the theoretical framework of the Copenhagen School, the concept of securitization of migration raises. The objective of this TFM is to analyse to what extent the European Union's immigration and asylum policy has developed into a security issue in the EU, and the impacts of this process.
