Title: La colonización del Alto Valle del Río Negro y Neuquén en Argentina: ferrocarril, obras hidráulicas y electricidad para consolidar el poblamiento
Author: Alvarez-Palau, Eduard J.
Abstract: Infrastructure networks centrally conditioned the forms of population in Argentina. A paradigmatic example was the colonization of the Alto Valle del Rio Negro. In a first stage, the reference network was the railroad. The configuration of the Argentine railway network continued in its initial stage with the fixed capital investment scheme, where English investment funds financed the infrastructural construction and gradually recovered capital with freight and exploitation rights. The resulting network was articulated around Buenos Aires and gradually expanded as a mesh as the Pampas were colonized or natural deposits were found. In this way, the activities of agricultural, livestock and extractive production gradually returned to the company the capital contributed. However, the Government of the Argentine Nation saw with concern the lack of inhabitants in the southernmost region of the country: Patagonia. Its adverse climatology, the lack of water resources and the constant aggressions of the indigenous peoples, prevented the definitive establishment of settlers who guaranteed the Argentineization of the lands. Therefore, a set of government policies focused on the Patagonian colonization began.
