Abstract: The purpose of this study is to analyse the language policy and the management of multilingualism in the main European Union institutions (the Commission, the Council, the Court of Justice and the Parliament), in order to assess feasibility of increasing the number of European languages to which the official documentation is currently being translated, through the use of machine translation processes and their subsequent editing. After presenting the legal basis for multilingualism in the European Union, this study identifies the successes and difficulties of the European institutions in managing effectively and inclusively multilingual communication in a supranational democracy, observing in detail the case of the Catalan language. This study also includes a breakdown of the following topics: problems derived from the number of official and minority languages of the EU, inconsistencies between EU language policy and real management in the translation of official documentation and technology resources in the field of translation as an alternative to the problem. Finally, the study presents an evaluation of the solutions for the problems observed, focusing specifically on the case of the Catalan language, along with the conclusions of the author.
