Abstract: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small RNA molecules involved in the regulation of gene expression. They act by inhibiting the translation process of the targets or messenger RNAs (mRNAs) which they interact with. It is known that these molecules play an important role in the control of certain cellular processes and they are also evolutionarily conserved. The main goal of this Master's Thesis is to characterize the interactions that occur between microRNAs and their targets by using CLIP-seq data obtained in human (Homo sapiens) and mouse (Mus musculus) assays. First, some descriptive variables related to the nucleotide sequences and to the secondary structure of the dimer resulting from the miRNA-target interaction are extracted. Later, several clustering algorithms are used to study the relationship between those attributes. Although the results obtained can not be considered as conclusive, it is possible to appreciate consistent patterns in the two species under study. However, there are still unsolved questions and additional efforts are required to deal with some methodological limitations.
