|Abstract:||Academic scientific researchers who are in transition to a professional career in the industry must demonstrate that besides the essential skills for research also own transferable skills. In this study we analyzed academic researchers that are seeking industry jobs, describing their own transferable competencies, they think are needed by the industry. For this purpose, we interviewed 8 scientific researchers in transition to the industry of different nationalities. We further analyzed their curriculum and LinkedIn profiles. The study has revealed that researchers have an incomplete understanding of the industry-demanded transferable skills and thus this disconnect leads to consequences as: i) researchers do not give the necessary value to transferable skills when looking for work; ii) there is a disconnection regarding the vision they have of the transferable competences demanded by the industry and those that they have acquired; iii) the job search techniques they use are mostly passive; iv) researchers have an apparent distorted view of the industry. As main recommendations for scientists: i) train capability of transferable skills; ii) create a job search action plan. iii) discover the labor market; iv) train behavioral competences interviews techniques; v) greater use of active job search techniques; vi) create associations of researchers in transition to the industry. We also include recommendations for Universities and industry.|
