Abstract: The open access university institutional repositories are digital files of intellectual products produced within one or more universities which are accessible to users with little or no restrictions, while being interoperable. This paper proposes a new approach on how to assess open access university institutional repositories in the European context. It makes a proposal for improving objectivity in a qualitative classification approach. At the same time it is conducted a review of Open Access university repositories in the Spanish State.
