Abstract: The epigenetics represents the capacity of an individual to modulate the expression of their genes based on the environment that surrounds them. Genetic expression should be able to be modulated by every individual independently from previous generations. However, some individuals show epigenetics marks that belong to a different environment. Several studies sign pregnancy and mother¿s nutrition as one of the most important epigenetics modulator, with more strength compared to other upcoming factors. The components of the mother's diet have the ability to interfere with the DNA methylation, histone modifications and microRNAs. For that reason, if the mother has a methyl group deficient diet that will conclude with epigenetic alterations, in the same way as an unbalanced diet regarding fat and proteins. Genes that have their expression altered mostly have the function to change the DNA expression themselves, as the ones in the folate metabolism and the ones involved in the methyl groups pathway. Numerous studies involving animals have agreed that some of this changes are transgenerational, meaning that eventhough they cannot be inherited by the information found in the genome, they are passed from one generation to another. It is of importance that many studies agree on the fact that some of the modifications can be reverted adjusting the mother's diet or adding supplements. Leaving the door open to using mother's nutrition during pregnancy as therapy to change the future health status of an individual, as prevention for diseases or for reverting the epigenetic programming if being deleterious.
