Abstract: Current migratory experiences take place in a globalised world where transnational family communication using information and communication technologies (ICTs) is an increasingly widespread practice. With the aim of studying the experiences of distance in these processes, we undertook in-depth interviews and group discussions with 40 Bolivian immigrant women in Barcelona. This short descriptive article reflects on a number of results from this qualitative research. These results, firstly, highlight how ICTs are identified as the only medium for sustaining relationships and family roles at a distance. These technologies allow emotions and decisions to flow over borders. Secondly, for these women, use of these technologies has affected their experiences of distance and complicated their feelings of closeness and distance with respect to the non-migrant family members, as they highlight their presence and absence in the family dynamic.
