Abstract: Different studies suggest that solitude is a subjective experience, with a higher possibility to develop it as you grow older, and especially in institutionalization situations. Solitude has negative consequences at all levels: social, emotional, mental and physical. That is the reason why it is essential to identify and deal with it. A mixed study (qualitative-quantitative) has been designed for this research. Interviews have been carried out to health social workers who work in old people's homes (n=8) and surveys have been carried out to old institutionalized people with a good cognitive level (n=24). The results show that not all HSW agree with the original thesis. Although six of them share this premise, the other two consider that due to the present lifestyle, living in an old people's home offers more possibilities to feel accompanied and to have more relationship with others. They have all referred to the model of Person-Centered Care, as an approach that makes it possible to provide a better attention, and more personalized thanks to the knowledge of their life stories. This approach is even more necessary when the person suffers from dementia. They have all found it relevant that the activities are satisfactory and make sense for the person. They have also given importance to the role of the volunteers, the spaces, the good treatment, and the cooperation with families as tools to reduce solitude. To conclude, a list of good practice is provided at the end.
