Abstract: Obesity is defined as the abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat that can be harmful to health and it is considered a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, various types of cancer, etc. In 2016 it was estimated that there were more than 340 million children between 5 - 19 years old with overweight and obesity in the world. In Spain it has been estimated that the prevalence exceeds 40% in the child population between 8 - 11 years old. It has been determined that the cause of this epidemic is due to an energy imbalance between calories in (consumed) and calories out (expended) as a result of a change in habits, a consequence of environmental and social changes. To approach their treatment requires attention to the habits of consumption and physical activity that are established in childhood. These habits are mediated by internal and situational factors. There is little research on dietary decision-making in children, in this aspect, the behavioural sciences help to understand the psychology of how people make decisions, why they have difficulties to eat healthy and to clarify about the transcendental factors that contribute to the cause and maintenance of public health problems such as obesity. This work aims to be an effective tool in the fight against this epidemic and for this uses the knowledge provided by behavioural economics to develop techniques of influence on the decision-making related to health that reduce the prevalence of overweight and childhood obesity involving families and attending to decisions made at home. If successful, this intervention would help confirm that in making food decisions, as in the rest of decision-making processes, numerous biases and human cognitive errors act and that these would be part of the multiple causes that spread the epidemic of obesity nowadays.
