Title: Interacciones entre alimentos y medicamentos: aspectos generales
Author: González Álvarez, Sonia

Abstract: Taking food and drugs together may have unexpected effects, adverse or not, on the release, absorption, distribution, metabolism and/or elimination of the drug and, consequently, influence the efficacy and safety of the drug therapy. Similarly, the absorption, metabolic utilization and elimination of nutrients and, therefore, the nutritional status of individuals may be modified. This review examines the different classifications of food-drug interactions according to which of the two substrates (drug or food) is affected by the presence of the other; and also according to the mechanism by which they are produced; and also the most frequent adverse effects derived from them, the population most sensitive to them and the components of the diet most involved in the interactions. Finally, prevention measures are studied that would avoid the frequent food-drug interactions in our environment, which involve coordination and knowledge of them by the professionals involved in the prescription and administration of medicines and health care. The present dissertation shows that the interactions between food and medicine are not a very studied subject and that many of the available data on them come from more or less complete studies. Therefore, further research is essential to obtain more conclusive results and to be able to establish a specific strategy to prevent the effects derived from this type of interactions.
