Abstract: Altmetrics, seen as "the study and use of scholarly impact measures based on activity in online tools and environments" (Priem, Groth & Taraborelly, 2012), are presented as possible alternative metrics for analysing the social impact of research. Consequently, the UOC decided to run a pilot trial throughout 2018 to analyse the social impact of scientific output in general and academic social media. To achieve this, it used the free Webometric Analist. This application gathers the metrics data found on social media based on the DOI of scientific articles thanks to integration with the free API offered by Altmetric.com. The pilot trial was divided into three parts: 1.Analysis of the social impact of the UOC's scientific output through a sample of articles published in 2016-2017 taken from the University's Current Research Information System (CRIS). Selection of the altmetrics indicators (Mendeley readers, Tweets received, Altmetric Attention Score, etc.) and the methodology to be used for their subsequent analysis. 2.Detection of the possible factors that raise visibility of scientific output on social media. Altmetric data were crossed with the following variables: open access of publications; journals placed in Q1/Q2 in the Clarivate Analytics' Journal Citation Reports and Scopus' Scimago Journal Rank international rankings, and citations received by the articles on Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar. 3. The UOC's position compared with a defined comparative statistical universe, i.e. in relation to other distance universities, both in Spain and internationally. A standardized statistical analysis was conducted (taken into account differences between publication year, document type and subject category). Scopus and Altmetric.com were used as the data source of the sample analysed.
