Abstract: Due to the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT), it has been necessary to create new technologies and devices that enable the global connection of objects. These new networks are the wide area and low power networks (LPWAN) that have become very popular, within these new networks the leading technologies are Sigfox, LoRaWAN, NB-IoT and LTE-M, which compete for the deployment of IoT on a large scale However, because they are technologies of recent appearance, the information found about their behavior in real scenarios is limited, and the need for the use of simulators for their characterization arises. In this paper, study on LoRaWAN technology and the characterization of Sigfox, NB-IoT and LTE-M technologies is carried out to make a comparison between them according to their IoT characteristics and factors, as well as to evaluate advantages, disadvantages and use cases of each of them. Finally, OMNET ++ simulations of LoRaWAN technology are carried out in different scenarios, which will entail a modification in the number of nodes, number of gateways and coverage area. The objective of these simulations is to determine what characteristics a LoRaWAN scenario must have in order to provide reliable IoT coverage in different scenarios. With all this, it can be concluded that LoRaWAN can be used in applications that do not have latency requirements, such as home automation, Smart-cities, agriculture, etc ... offering low cost, great deployment and long battery life.
