Abstract: | A volcanic eruption is a phenomenon that leaves no one indifferent. The late Bronze Age population, living near the Cyclades and by extension in the whole Eastern Mediterranean, experienced an explosion of considerable magnitude. The work presents different perspectives to explain the generation of this phenomenon and the difficulty in finding past evidences to characterize the explosion and evaluate precisely the impact on the environment and people. The discovery of a city under the ashes of the volcano (Akrotiri) has allowed us to better understand the structure of an advanced late Bronze society. Also, the possible connection between this fact and the myths (particularly Atlantis), provides another way to analyze how this phenomenon was perceived. Finally, the impact on Minoan Culture was significant and perhaps decisive for its decline. |
