Abstract: The higher prevalence of pregnant women who have overweight and obesity, suffering from alterations related to insulin resistance (IR) and metabolic syndrome, together with the growth of pathologies like gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), lead to the conclusion that there is a need for studying the lifestyle of pregnant women. Pregnancy, which is a pro-inflammatory state when major physiological changes take place, is considered to be a key factor for the development of some pathologies such as GDM. When it comes to cases of obesity and overweight, when IR usually coexists with low grade inflammation and higher body mass indexes (BMI) and sometimes in cases of metabolic obesity (with the highest IR and a history of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)), a greater impact is triggered through excessive weight gain during pregnancy. This fact raises the risk of complications such as GDM, with children born preterm (with an intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR)), as well as macrosomic children, both with a greater predisposition to obesity and metabolic disorders in adulthood. Taking everything into account, and given the role that the placenta plays as a nutrient transporter, and the intestinal microbiota in fetal programming, it is especially important to control appetite, regulating the number of quality intakes, aiming at keeping a healthy and balanced diet, regular physical exercise, low levels of stress and adequate rest. Healthy lifestyle habits will influence the correct development of pregnanc.
