Abstract: The current study analyses the fake news linked to the coronavirus, identified by two Spanish fact-checkers, during the first two weeks of the state of alarm decreed by the Government (between 14th and 29th of March 2020). The objective is to analyze the fake news verified by Maldita and Newtral in their social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, and establish a categorization that will help us understand the situation of the pandemic. The research shows the most frequent false information, the engagement rate, and the actions carried out by fact-checkers to verify and combat misinformation and disinformation. It also shows that fact-checkers not only disprove facts, but also provide additional information about the virus with the help of health and science professionals. The results reveal that the pandemic has generated a large number of fake news stories about politics and official sources, followed by the dissemination of false content about the origin of the virus and ways to prevent it, as well as, the actions of citizens and attempts to mislead people. In short, six categories which reveal that social media is the main channel that spread lies. In order to win the battle against disinformation, a joint union must be established between verifiers, the media, social networks and Internet users. Collaborative knowledge and digital literacy are two key skills to fight fake news.
