Abstract: The following thesis focuses on Smart Homes within the context of Smart Cities. It aims to introduce a change around the actual concept of what is a home, its energy usage and the technology needed to make it more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Along with this whole document analysis will be carried out regarding the actual status of different Smart Buildings and Homes already built, starting from the ones located around the world and outside Europe, looking afterwards to the ones in Europe but outside Spain, and finally looking into the main buildings and projects developed in Spain. After that, the different existing technologies (or in development) applicable to Smart Homes will be studied and presented, the current market situation will be analysed, as well as the currently applicable legislation, the most common Smart Home architectures and topologies, the safety and security of these homes and the energy sources to be used. As a result of all these, a Smart Home prototype will be developed that can be used as a baseline for future similar buildings and that will be based on the previous studies carried out in this thesis. The architecture selected and the technologies used will be explained, discussing the requirements and needs this house will cover. Finally, future lines of work will be discussed and some final conclusions regarding this thesis will be reached.
